TAILORING & BESPOKE

SS20 Showroom | Jantae Spinxs, Model | Sam Trotter, Photographer

In 2012, I finally got the itch to get behind a sewing machine.

Growing up, I played witness to my mother’s spectacular talent of sewing and alteration. There were many nights that I listened to her sing and vocalize to the hum of her Singer sewing machine. She loved to have company. The atelier of a seamstress can be lonely, so I was always welcome. An inquisitive child, I would spend hours asking her questions and playing with her pins, chalks, and doodling on her pattern covers. Sometimes I would make crafts with her fabric scraps and swatches.

Meanwhile, my beginnings in design started with me transferring my graphic designs onto shoes & clothing for my friends, family and community. From my middle school years into high school, I had the opportunity to create a lot of hand painted designs in between my school work and extracurricular activities. I was always inspired by stylish icons like Pharrell Williams, but on the breach of young adulthood, I took a liking to the Dandy style of dress. I became fascinated by vintage paisleys and elbow patched cricket jumpers. In an effort to reinterpret my own version of those classic relics, I asked my mother to walk me through the art of sewing. This is where my journey as a tailor began.

I created my first collection at Florida Atlantic University for the Program Board Spring Fashion Show in 2014. I took a hiatus in order to gain more skills in sewing and to create an authentic designing point of view. I debuted my first official collection in the spring of 2017 at the FAU Fashion Forward 4th Annual Spring Fashion Show.

As a clothing designer, I draw inspiration from the styles of Streetwear, Grunge, and mixing classic sartorial tailoring elements. I also pay homage to my culture and heritage in a variety of bold and understated mediums.
